There are models that can mop and charge themselves This is an advantage important for families with pets or children. The top performers in our tests have great obstacles to avoid.
1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO
The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling the i3 EVO are both identical robots that differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is a good option for those who want an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but are willing to manually empty the robot's dustbin when it is full.
Both robots do well cleaning up surface debris from carpets and hard floors and they're excellent in moving around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates intelligent maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. However unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots that we tested the i3+ doesn't have a feature for avoiding obstacles which means it can be stuck on things like socks or power cords and it may have trouble traversing transitions across surfaces like hardwood to carpet.
iRobot recommends that you tidy the area around the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other clutter it may encounter. It's also recommended to keep the dust bin and filter clean so they don't become clogged with dirt. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station and takes the dirt out of the docking station's dust bin. Then it continues cleaning from where it left off. The i3+ EVO's battery can last for approximately an hour and a half of continuous use, and it takes around three hours to fully recharge.
2. Roomba by iRobot
The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and comes with the most recent features. It's self-charging and self-navigating. However, the most significant feature is its self-emptying bin. This eliminates the need for regular maintenance.
The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that lets it map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning jobs, and you can direct your robot using the app or by voice.
In our tests the i7+ performed quicker and more maneuverable than our second-placed model and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces kinds, including carpeting. Its main advantage over the eufy, though, is its self-emptying dustbin which eliminates a major source of maintenance and reduces the amount of time spent cleaning.
We were also impressed with the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We utilized these services to instruct the robot on how to start or stop cleaning sessions as well as move around the room, and even vacuum a specific area. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and straightforward through the iRobot Home app. After being connected, to voice commands to the i7+ such as "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.
3. Dyson Cyclone V10
In a world full of cordless vacs that are like minivans and buses, this small Dyson model is an old-fashioned sports car. It's powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in the majority of homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on a coffee table or bookcase.
auto vacuum is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense lithium-ion battery that produces continuous, non-fading power for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filter system captures allergens, and then releases cleaner air into your home. Its specialized cleaning head drives bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpets to trap large dust and crumbs. It comes with three suction modes that can be adapted to the specific task. It can quickly switch from floor vacuum to handheld vacuum, and vice versa.
This model has a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also offers easy access to 2 attachments and an handheld. This is a major improvement over previous Dysons that require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.
The main drawback of the V10 is its sluggish run time. Its claims on the market that it can last up to 60 minutes of run time are misleading, as CR's testing shows. This is a typical, not an exceptional, run time for a battery-powered cordless vac. It's still enough time to clean most of an average-sized house but not long enough to cover every area (though an additional run-through often does the trick). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than older Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is significantly better on carpets with low pile.
4. iRobot Roomba 694
The 694 is a standard robot vacuum that's an excellent choice for those who don't have lots of money to spend on a robot. It was able to remove all kinds of debris in our tests and would often go over the same area many times to ensure an efficient clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach corners and the edges of walls.
Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it lacks the mapping capability of more advanced models like our top choices, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. It is prone to getting stuck on cords for phones or furniture that is low and often runs out of power before returning to its base.
The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694, as it has less parts that require regular cleaning, is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, has a lower cost of recurring costs, has more advanced automation abilities and can better navigate its own. It also has a bigger dustbin and charges quicker.
The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba 694. It also has physical boundaries strips and can be controlled with your smartphone's voice assistance. It also feels better-built and has a more powerful motor, and works better on floors that are bare and low-pile carpet, while providing a greater variety of features for automation.
5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+
Samsung is a well-known brand in home electronics. It's no surprise, then, that they are also among the top manufacturers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is equipped with cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.
The app offers a variety of options for customizing your robotic cleaner. These include mopping levels, virtual barriers and behavior customizations, docking frequency settings and much more. It's simple to comprehend and user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.
In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) quite well, clearing up 86 percent of it. However, it didn't do particularly well with taller objects like cords and socks which was a disappointment. It's also a little more expensive than some of the other models we tried and could be a deal-breaker for certain shoppers.
The app allows you to access the camera onboard of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's area of cleaning. This feature allows you to check in on your children or pets while you're away. The filter and the dust bin are washable for quick, easy cleanup. The Jet Bot AI+ comes with self-emptying clean stations, which helps keep the bin clean and improves suction power.
6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum
Contrary to other robotic vacuums that are specifically designed for carpets and hard floors, Black and Decker robots are specifically designed for hard floors. The robots have an extra wide cleaning path, as well as a dustbin that is 2X bigger than the competitors. This lets them keep the area clean for longer. In addition, they have two side sweepers to clean along edges and in corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also comes with AutoSense technology, which can tell the presence of dirt on surfaces or embedded dirt and automatically adjusts its power level. The app also lets you to customize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum by using different colors, so you can easily identify what areas it's focusing on or where it's gotten stuck.
The app makes it possible to steer the robot manually in the event of need. My living room rug, for instance, has a darkly-colored border that could cause trouble for other robots. The HRV 425BL however continued to travel across the border without ever registering the cliff. Also, the ability to create the weekly cleaning schedule is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
